NIGEL COATES
Country / England
Nigel Coates was born in 1949 in Malvern, England and graduated in architecture in London in 1974, where he taught until 1989.
He has achieved renown thanks to the theatricality of his style. He first came to public attention in 1984 with the publication of NATO (Narrative Architecture Today) magazine. A manifesto for a socio-culturally engaged and popular, narrative driven architecture.
His works in Tokyo (Metropol Restaurant, Parco Café Bongo) and Sapporo (Arca di Noè) are a tangible testimony of this, as are the shops in London, where Coates’ spectacularity achieves its full expression.
Coates has designed exhibitions and interiors and constructed buildings all over the world. Among his exhibitions we may cite Global Cities at the 2006 Architecture Biennial in Venice.
His works are on display in the major museums of the world, such as the Victoria and Albert, the MOMA, the FRAC and the Vitra Design Museum.
He is currently Head of the department of Architecture at the Royal College of Art in London. This year Coates has been invited at Biennale 2008.
